Trans‐generational viral transmission and immune priming are dose‐dependent

چکیده

It is becoming increasingly apparent that trans-generational immune priming (i.e. the transfer of parental immunological experience to its progeny resulting in offspring protection from pathogens persist across generations) a common phenomenon not only vertebrates, but also invertebrates. Likewise, it known covert pathogenic infections may become ‘triggered’ into an overt infection by various stimuli, including exposure heterologous infections. Yet, rarely have both phenomena been explored parallel. Using as model system African armyworm Spodoptera exempta, eruptive agricultural pest and endemic dsDNA virus (Spodoptera exempta nucleopolyhedrovirus, SpexNPV), aim this study was explore impact inoculating-dose on pathogen transmission (in broadest sense). Larvae were orally challenged with one five doses SpexNPV survivors these treatments mated their monitored for viral mortality. Offspring parents low showed evidence ‘immune priming’ enhanced survival following challenge); contrast, higher exhibited greater susceptibility challenge. Most larvae died they with; most had highest killed vertically transmitted (90%) challenge virus. These results demonstrate outcome potentially lethal critically dependent level generation—either increasing resistance at very (consistent priming) or triggering). We discuss implications findings understanding natural epizootics baculoviruses using them biological control agents.

Within and transgenerational immune priming in an insect to a DNA virus.

Invertebrates mount a sophisticated immune response with the potential to exhibit a form of immune memory through 'priming'. Increased immune protection following early exposure to bacteria has been found both later in life (within generation priming) and in the next generation (transgeneration priming) in a number of invertebrates. However, it is unclear how general immune priming is and wheth...

Parental Legacy in Insects: Variation of Transgenerational Immune Priming during Offspring Development

In insects, a parental immune challenge can prepare and enhance offspring immune activity. Previous studies of such transgenerational immune priming (TGIP) mainly focused on a single offspring life stage. However, different developmental stages may be exposed to different risks and show different susceptibility to parental immune priming. Here we addressed the question (i) whether TGIP effects ...

Developmental programming and transgenerational transmission of obesity.

The global obesity pandemic is often causally linked to marked changes in diet and lifestyle, namely marked increases in dietary intakes of high-energy diets and concomitant reductions in physical activity levels. However, far less attention has been paid to the role of developmental plasticity and alterations in phenotypic outcomes resulting from environmental perturbations during the early-li...

piRNAs derived from ancient viral processed pseudogenes as transgenerational sequence-specific immune memory in mammals.

Endogenous bornavirus-like nucleoprotein elements (EBLNs) are sequences within vertebrate genomes derived from reverse transcription and integration of ancient bornaviral nucleoprotein mRNA via the host retrotransposon machinery. While species with EBLNs appear relatively resistant to bornaviral disease, the nature of this association is unclear. We hypothesized that EBLNs could give rise to an...

The transgenerational transmission of holocaust trauma

This paper outlines an attachment-theory based model of transgenerational trauma inspired by the successful psychoanalytic treatment of a severely disturbed adolescent with obsessive-compulsive disorder who was the first child of the first daughter of a holocaust survivor. It is proposed that the transmission of specific traumatic ideas across generations may be mediated by a vulnerability to d...
